Ostend (population 28.000) is located east of the city center between Bornheim and the river and is currently developing and expanding strongly. While formerly inconspicuous neighborhoods are gaining new brightness, brand new residential areas are developing around the perimeter of the European Central Bank, which was relocated into a recently constructed building in 2015. The quieter neighborhoods northeast of the zoological garden consist mainly of buildings from the late nineteenth century and post-war buildings. In addition to regular shops and stores for everyday purposes there are many car dealerships and high-quality furniture stores located on and around the Hanauer Landstrasse, the main road connecting the Ostend with other eastern parts of the city. An interesting mixture of restaurants and clubs has also developed in this area of town.
