Frankfurt : Innenstadt, 6700 inhabitants |
General character: The term "Frankfurter City" describes the area inside of the former ring of defenses in the narrower sense. It basically refers to the area of the former Old city, which remained an area of half-timbered houses till the war. The "Römerberg" including the gothic city hall as well as reconstructed half-timbered houses represent the remains of medieval Frankfurt. The city's shopping districts are located further north as the main shopping arcade called the "Zeil" gains its major significance through a large number of shopping centers. In the western part of the city several tower blocks border on the bankhouses while the colossal Commerzbank-building almost touches the malls. The "Fressgass", the mall connecting the opera district and the "Hauptwache", and on Liebfrauen Street on the ancient "Römer"-mount offer a wide range of opportunities for a stroll around the city. In contrast to the area around the Hauptwache the eastern city-center appears rather neglected and excluded from the improvements of the city. The city center only functions as a residential area in a few zones. Commerce and office work dominate the atmosphere so that some parts of the city seem abandoned in the evening as if nothing but some cineastes and Kneipengänger can awaken them.
Sights: Frankfurt's city hosts a variety of meaningful and interesting historical buildings, museums and cultural institutions. Medieval and monastery churches as well as the exhibition halls of the Schirn or the Museum of Modern Art are definitely worth a visit. The theatre, opera house and the "Alte Oper" gained international reputation. The art scene consisting of several interesting galleries settled down at the Braubach Street, which is located only a few steps away from the "Dom"-cathedral, and the St. Paul's church.
Shopping and going out: The Frankfurter Zeil, which has been transformed into a mall in the Seventies, maintains one of Germany's most lucrative shopping streets. Shopping centers and commerce create a special environment. As a counterpart to the Zeil the exclusive Goethe Street running parallel to the "Fressgass" mostly provides with luxuries and semi-luxuries of all kinds. Coffee shops and delicatessen shops in the Fressgass attract any visitor. The market held each Saturday morning on the "Konstabler Wache" offers agricultural products from the nearest farms and thus enjoys great popularity. An absolute must is a visit at the so-called "Kleinmarkthalle" at the Liebfrauenberg, a building in which various stalls sell delicacies from all over the world. The city center is a major location for numerous popular clubs. And recently nightlife has developed around the Fressgass and at the Kornmarkt as well.
Infrastructure: Most of the destinations in the city center are reachable by foot. The "Hauptwache" serves as the main terminal for public transport. There are a handful of car parks downtown since parking lots on the streets are hardly available.
